Stable Release 0.13.7- FireTV Support Fixes

For a limited time, Amazon is making Fire TV publishing free for ALL GameSalad Mac users!

To celebrate, we’ll be giving away a total of $1000 total to 3 randomly selected games that are published on Fire TV between now and March 30th. In addition, every game published on Fire TV will net you a free month of PRO, giving you access to publishing on all GameSalad supported platforms and powerful monetization features. For official rules

    Features:

    • Added an option at publishing to control whether or not the Back button exits the app on Android devices. For Kindle and Fire TV apps, the back button is disabled.

    Fixes:

    • Fixed the Hibernate event not pausing audio on device sleep or screen saver activation.

    • Fixed loading wheels not showing up on iOS 8.0+ devices.

    • Reverted the Change Scene fix from 0.13.4RC since it was causing issues with some user projects. If you plan on using gamepad button presses to change scenes, it is recommended that you wait for the button to return back to false before you change the scene.

    • Fixed sound bug on firetv where looping sounds were not getting paused.

Also includes all the features and fixes form 0.13.6

For more information on how to put controller support in you games see our Cookbook controller page and our next GameSalad Monthly Meetup

    2. Graphene SDK (previously known as “Cross platform Creator”). Nothing new to report on this front other than work is being done here. For more info or to sign up for beta access, refer to this thread: http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/75011/introducing-graphene-sdk/

    3. Release 0.13.0 for Windows version of GameSalad Creator! We hope to put out a nightly build for Windows 0.13.0 on Monday! I’ve heard that this will be very similar to the 0.13.0 release we put out for the Mac version of Creator! One thing that is still being worked on is usb Android viewer support.

    4. Release 0.14.0 for the Windows version of GameSalad Creator. This is one of our higher priorities that we’re working towards. This release is planned to be the one that gets Windows version of Creator fully synched up with the Mac version feature wise! This includes all the features we have planned for our 0.14.0 release for Mac as well (see some below)!

    5. Nightly build for the Windows version of Creator. We are still working towards fixing the known issues in the Windows nightly build (and there should be a new nightly Monday). For more info and to let us know of any issues you’re having with the Windows nightly build, check out the following thread: http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/75007/windows-creator-nightly-0-12-1-is-available/p1 and get the build here: http://gamesalad.com/download/releases.

    6. Release 0.14.0 for the Mac version of Creator. Work is being done on this front to bring a lot of long desired features, and we plan on releasing a nightly build as soon as the ARC bugs are worked out! A few features this release will have are AdMob integration, the new rendering engine, and full PlaysTogether support. We’re still working on converting Creator over to use ARC to reduce some of the performance issues you guys have been having (you can follow the list of ARC bugs holding up this release here: http://bugs.gamesalad.com/buglist.cgi?list_id=6578&query_format=advanced&resolution=---&short_desc=ARC:&short_desc_type=allwordssubstr). Check out this thread for more info on release 0.14.0: http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/74854/nightly-build-0-14-0/p1.

    7. New marketplace. Nothing new to report here. Work is still being done on this front and I'll let you guys know when I hear more!

That’s all I have for you guys. More coming your way next week!

Windows Creator Nightly/Release Candidate build 0.13.1 is available

It is highly recommended that you uninstall any old versions of the Windows Creator Nightly before installing the new one.

    Features

    • Various bug fixes, including behaviors not triggering on table changes, and Change Scene not working.

    • Support for importing/exporting csv tables with row/column labels, and column data types.

    • Support for screenshots in native preview.
    • Support for joystick attributes (but see known issues)
    • Most game projects should import from Mac Creator 0.13
    • GameSalad Viewer 0.13.7 supported.
    • Support for the GameSalad Android Viewer over a usb port.
    • Windows Creator Nightly should install even if it can't open the firewall ports needed for GameSalad Viewer support. However, you will not be able to access the Viewer over wifi in this case. You will still be able to use the Android Viewer over usb.

    Android Viewer over usb support
In order to use the Android Viewer over usb, you will need to install the Android SDK (found here). You will then need to tell Creator where to find the adb.exe program (under platform-tools of the SDK), which you can set in the preferences dialog.

    Native Preview
We have temporarily disabled the OpenGL version check for native preview. If you run native preview and it crashes, please send us the result of the dxdiag program. This will help us support as many graphics cards as we can.

    Known Issues

    • While the Show Ad behavior still exists, it has been deprecated in favor of the Show Banner behavior, and will be removed in a future release. If you use Show Ad in your project, please change the behavior to Show Banner.

    • There is a known bug where if you use the new native previewer, and then try to use the old web previewer, Windows Creator may crash. Please shut down Creator and restart if you want to switch between the previewers.

    • While the joystick attributes can be used in your project, joysticks are not yet implemented in native or web preview. However, you can test joysticks by previewing on the viewers.
    • Network commands not currently supported.
    • The Windows version of adb.exe can lock up. If you try to use the Android Viewer over usb, and both Windows Creator and the Viewer appear to have locked up, try restarting your computer. If you still cannot use the Viewer, contact our tech support. Unfortunately this is not something we have control over.
    • If you open a project with File->Open after starting up Windows Creator instead of File->Open Recent, and try to preview, Creator may crash. For some reason the Open File dialog appears to cause the crash on some, but not all, machines.
    • Some Text/Font combinations in Display Text can cause native preview to crash. We think we've found a fix for it, which should be in the next RC.
    • Native preview on Vista machines will crash Windows Creator.

Note there is no difference between nightly 0.13.1 and RC. We felt that free users should have access to it, as the current official release is so out of date.

Report Any Bugs If you find bugs in the build, let us know! We'll be watching the forums, support tickets and bug database for info on this.

    Thanks for your help!

Hello again all you GameSalad fans! Once again I’ve gathered some info on what we’ve been working / focused on to share with you guys, this time I’ll be doing it a little differently though! I’m going to do a sort of quickie update above the normal state of GameSalad. Enjoy!

We also took care of the rest of the ARC bugs and have a build in the hands of our QA team currently! We plan to have a new RC build out to you guys Monday that has the increased performance which is great! We're also looking into the memory leaks in Creator.

Recent surveys completed by GameSalad users showed that you wanted a monthly plan as an alternative to the annual one.

Today, GameSalad is proud to announce a new way to pay for GameSalad PRO memberships. Starting today, in addition to annual subscriptions, we are pleased to offer a monthly PRO membership, with easy payments of just $29. The monthly plan confers the exact same PRO benefits as the annual plan, and after the one year commitment renews on a month to month basis.

The annual plan is still $299 a year, and offers our best pricing. The $29 a month plan now provides GameSalad PRO features with conveniently billed low monthly payments. Current PRO members can take advantage of the monthly pricing when they renew. Those who are not yet enjoying the powerful publishing and monetization features, there’s never been a better time to go PRO!

Hello again all you GameSalad fans! Once again I’ve gathered some info on what we’ve been working / focused on to share with you guys, I’ve also decided that I like the short version and will keep adding those as well. Enjoy!

    Short Version:

We pushed out a release candidate build for the Mac version of Creator (0.13.9) that has much better performance! We also plan on inviting some users to test out the new marketplace next week so it’ll be here before you know it. More work is still being done on Graphene (can’t share any more news yet). Our primary focus will be getting out a stable build for Windows version of Creator (0.13.x note: we hope to have one out in a few weeks) and then will shift over to getting out 0.14.0 for Mac Creator.

    Standard Version:

    1. Graphene SDK (previously known as “Cross platform Creator”). Check out the comments section of a previous SoGS post to see the most recently shared info! Other than that, there’s been work coming along on Graphene’s website as well as the tool itself. For other previously shared info or to sign up for beta access, refer to this thread: http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/75011/introducing-graphene-sdk/

    2. Release Candidate 0.13.2 for Windows version of GameSalad Creator. Now that we have a release out for the Mac version of Creator with improved performance, we are making this our main focus! We still need to fix up the known issues before pushing out a stable build. For the full list of features, known issues, and to report any issues you have using the 0.13.2 RC build head to this thread: http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/83463/windows-creator-rc-0-13-2-is-available/p1. To download the release, head here: http://gamesalad.com/download/releases Note: It is highly recommended that you uninstall any old versions of the Windows Creator Nightly before installing the new one.

    3. Release candidate 0.13.9 for Mac version of GameSalad Creator! We recently pushed out a release candidate of a build that has Creator moved over to using ARC. This has greatly improved Creators performance, so go download it here: http://gamesalad.com/download/releases! For more info on this release and to report bugs that you’ve found, refer to this thread: http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/85651/release-candidate-0-13-9-mac-arc-with-performance-improvements/p1.

    4. Release 0.14.0 for the Windows version of GameSalad Creator. We plan on giving the 0.14.0 releases for both the Mac and Windows versions of Creator more priority once we have the stable 0.13.x releases out. This release is planned to be the one that gets Windows version of Creator fully synched up with the Mac version feature wise! This includes all the features we have planned for our 0.14.0 release for Mac as well (see some below)!

    5. Release 0.14.0 for the Mac version of Creator. I’ve been informed that the new nightly build will be coming out after we get out a stable 0.13.x release for Windows (we hope to have one out in a few weeks time). A few features this release will have are AdMob integration, the new rendering engine, and full PlaysTogether support. Check out this thread for more info on release 0.14.0: http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/74854/nightly-build-0-14-0/p1.

    Release Candidate 0.13.10

    Fixes:

    • Fixed crash when closing a project after opening a table.

    • Fixed issue where adding or deleting conditions from a rule wouldn't take until you re-opened the actor.

    • Fixed crash when setting a project screenshot.

    Known Issues:

    • Hitting ESC to close the expression editor can cause a crash.

    • Copy Table behavior does not copy over row and column names. The workaround is to reference the actual row and column numbers instead of the name.

    • Post-app signing buttons such as "Show In Finder" and "iTunes Connect" and "Publish" will crash creator if clicked. The Finish button at the bottom will not cause a crash, however.

    • Changing table column type removes the column header

    • Creator may crash when moving an actor from one layer to another.

    • Table Boolean values will not change if they're on the first row.

    • You may experience a crash when logging into GameSalad Creator from the Dashboard.

    • An occasional crash may occur when loading a project while an Android device is plugged in via USB.

    • The Animate behavior will currently not show its images until you back out of the Actor and re-open it.

    • Moving from Actor Editor back to the Actor pane can cause a memory spike (memory leak is being investigated)

Includes all the fixes and features from 0.13.9 RC

  • 03/24/15--14:12: Ludum Dare 32 coming up!
  • Hey guys, Ludum Dare 32 is coming up soon (April 17th)!

If you’ve never heard of Ludum Dare before, it’s a game jam that takes place a few times a year. On the day LD starts, the theme will be revealed, leaving entrants 72 hours to create a game based on that theme! Or, in the more advanced “compo,” entrants have only 48 hours, must work solo, and must make the game from scratch.

If you’re crazy like me, that might actually sound fun to you. And GameSalad is a great tool for the job because of its speed and ease in publishing to the web!

Here are some tips and tricks I learned from competing in the Ludum Dare myself:

    Judging

Let’s start at the end - a very good place to start. It’s important to know how these games will be judged before you get too far into the design.

Ludum Dare games are judged by other entrants. These judges will find your game via the Coolness system, in which your game will appear closer to the top of the list if you’ve rated a lot of other entrants’ games. The obvious takeaway is that you should be playing and rating lots of games!

On the flipside, though, that means that all the other entrants are incentivized to play as many games as possible! So they will be looking for a short, simple experience that lets them give their vote and quickly move on to the next game.

    • Don’t count on friends, family, or the GameSalad community giving your game all the votes it needs, because they won’t be able to vote, unless they’ve also submitted a game for LD.
    • Aim for about 5-10 minutes of total gameplay (including restarts due to failure!).
    • If your game has a steep learning curve, or has lots of padding to make the game artificially longer than it should be, it probably won’t leave a good impression with your audience.
    • One mistake I see often (and have made myself) is that entrants try to make their game last longer by making it very difficult to complete! That’s doubly bad: not only are these games wasting the judges’ time, they’re making the experience more frustrating and less enjoyable.
    • As a rule, if your game can be completed, it should be pretty easy to do so quickly. You’ll very rarely see someone complain that a game like this is too easy, as long as there is interesting gameplay during the whole experience. To put it another way: the solution to “too easy” is often to add more variety rather than more difficulty.
    • If your game is more of an endurance test to see how long you last, do the opposite: make it more difficult so they quickly get to a game-over screen after they see all the mechanics and content the game has to offer. But, make sure you don’t make it difficult to see all the content in the first place!
    • The game needs to be easy to access. Typically, entrants prefer to avoid downloading a game. An installer is even worse! Fortunately, GameSalad lets you export your games to the Arcade, which doesn’t even require players to download a browser plugin (as long as their browser is fairly up-to-date). Plan on exporting to the Arcade.
    • Make sure to test with HTML5 Preview and on the Arcade early and often to avoid getting bitten by differences between the native and HTML5 engines.
    • You’ll have an option to embed your game directly in your entry page. You should do this! I’ll update this post with instructions as soon as I figure out the best way to do this, probably once the Dare starts and the entry page is accessible.

    Theme Voting

In the weeks leading to the Ludum Dare, the community will vote on its theme. Your game must be based on this theme in some way!

    • The winning theme will only be officially revealed the moment the Dare starts, but there will be qualifying polls before then. Watch the theme suggestions that seem to be doing well; one might win the final vote!
    • Start thinking of games for the themes that look like they might win. If you guess right, you'll be able to start working right away! If you guess wrong, you might be able to adapt one of your ideas. Even if that doesn't work, your mind will already be primed to brainstorm game ideas to fit a theme.
    • Themes are very loosely interpreted! If you can think of a clever and unintuitive use of the theme, or even a groan-worthy pun, many judges will love it. For example, the last LD had the theme “Entire Game on One Screen,” and I distinctly remember an entry where you play as a deer riding a TV.

    Making Your Game

    • This tip should be fairly obvious, but remember that your game needs to be made in under 72 hours (48 if you decide to do the “Compo”). So, keep it small!
    • Identify which features absolutely must make it into the game, and which ones would be nice if you have time. Don’t give up on the latter, but be prepared to let them go as the deadline gets closer.
    • Don’t be a hero! Sleep normally. Take breaks to eat and relax. It might feel like just wasting time, but you’ll often come back to the project with more ideas and a new perspective. I especially like to get up and take a walk frequently during the jam.

    Playtesting

    • The moment your game is playable, get a friend to playtest it!
    • If you can’t physically watch over their shoulder, ask them to share their screen with you. There’s lots of good ways to do this, including Skype, Google Hangouts, appear.in, etc.
    • If possible, find a playtester who you know isn’t going to just tell you it’s good because you made it.
    • Ask them to think out loud, but you must not answer any of their questions, address any of their criticism, or point out the “right” way to play until they’re finished playing. Remember, this is a preview of how your players will react when judging the game, and you won’t be there to answer their questions!

    Feedback

Undoubtedly, if you got a good tester, they will suggest some changes.

    • Resist the urge to get defensive. “It’s supposed to be like that” is almost never the right answer. If your tester has pointed out a problem, there most likely is one.
    • On the flipside, don’t feel obligated to implement exactly what your tester suggests. They don’t know your vision for the game. Instead, use their feedback to find the problems, and fix them your own way. (Unless you decide the original suggestion is, in fact, the best way to fix the problem!) Of course, in a Ludum Dare, the answer might just be “I don’t have time to fix that.”

    Feedback

Finally, for submission, be prepared to provide all of these things:

    1. A link to play the game -- That is, on the GameSalad Arcade.
    2. Your source code -- That’ll be a zip of your gsproj folder.
    3. A few screenshots -- Make them good! Make sure you have a good variety. Better to have fewer screenshots than a bunch that basically show the same thing.
    4. A description -- Make it good, but don’t rely on players reading it. In other words, don’t put instructions here!

Good luck! I can't wait to see what you'll make.

Windows Creator Release Candidate build 0.13.2 is available

It is highly recommended that you uninstall any versions earlier than 0.13.1 of the Windows Creator Nightly before installing the new one.

    Features

    • Fixed certain string/font combinations causing Display Text to crash in native preview.
    • To match Mac Creator, you now must log in to use Windows Creator. To make this process easier, you have the option of having Windows Creator remember your password to auto-login when you start it. Also, once you have successfully logged in, if you can't connect to the internet for some reason in later sessions, you will be able to use Windows Creator for 7 days before being required to log in again.

    • Native preview on Vista machines will crash Windows Creator.

    Release Candidate 0.13.11

    Fixes:

    • Fixed crash when closing the Expression Editor

    • Fixed crash when clicking "Show In Finder" or any of the other post-app signing buttons.

    Known Issues:

    • Copy Table behavior does not copy over row and column names. The workaround is to reference the actual row and column numbers instead of the name.

Includes all the fixes and features from 0.13.10 RC

    Report Any Bugs
If you find bugs in the Release Candidate, let us know! We'll be watching the forums, support tickets and bug database for info on this. Once we're all happy with the state of the build then we'll make it stable.

Take a moment to review the "known issues" section of the release notes before reporting any bugs. No need to duplicate reports on what we already know, right?
