Hello again all you GameSalad fans! I’ve gathered some info to share with you guys, enjoy!

  1. Graphene SDK (previously known as “Cross platform Creator”). More info will be shared with this topic from CodeWizard periodically. Speaking of which, he posted: “Our ability to iterate on Graphene is much improved over GameSalad. Changes are easier to make and releases can be very rapid. So, even with beta, we'll be responding to issues in days vs. weeks.” as well as a little more info in the following thread http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/78699/game-salad-staff-management-please-read. For even more info or to sign up for beta access, refer to this thread: http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/75011/introducing-graphene-sdk/

  2. Release 12 for the Windows version of GameSalad Creator. We’re still working hard on getting the Windows version of Creator up to date with the Mac version. More work has been done here adding the showing of scenes along the bottom of the native preview!

  3. Release 0.13.0. for the Mac version of Creator. Work is coming along on this as we’re working to fix the bugs that you guys have found using the release candidates and nightly builds. Once we have the bugs worked out enough we’ll push out a stable release for everyone!

  4. New Stable Release for the Mac version of Creator! We’ve recently put out a stable build (release 0.12.20).This includes 64-bit support for iOS apps. Feel free to grab a version of it here http://gamesalad.com/download/releases and check out this thread for more info and to report any issues you may find using the new stable release: http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/77667/stable-release-macintosh-gamesalad-creator-0-12-20/p1.

  5. Nightly build for the Windows version of Creator. We are currently working towards fixing the known issues in the Windows nightly build. For more info and to let us know of any issues you’re having with the Windows nightly build, check out the following thread: http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/75007/windows-creator-nightly-0-12-1-is-available and get the build here: http://gamesalad.com/download/releases.

  6. Updated roadmap. I made some edits to the roadmap yesterday and want to make a few more changes before I post it up for you guys!

  7. New marketplace. We’ve run into a couple issues on this front that need to be taken care of before we can get it in into testers’ hands.

That’s all I have for you guys. More coming your way next week!

Creator 0.12.20a Publishing Hotfix

Fixes:

  • Fixed an iOS Version Mismatch rejection issue with iOS apps. Due to this change, the Minimum OS Version option in Web Publishing is now locked to 6.0 for all iOS apps built with 0.12.20 and above to ensure apps can be submitted successfully.

Known Issue:

  • iAds are only appearing at the top of the screen even if set to appear at the bottom (Bug 688)
  • For iOS 8 devices, if you are unable to connect to the iOS Viewer, try shutting down and restarting the device.
  • Android devices that use ipv6 will not be able to connect to the Android Viewer over WiFi. Please use the USB connection instead for the Viewer.

NOTE: This is a publishing hotfix only. No new creator to download if you're already using 0.12.20. Please re-generate any apps built with the 0.12.20 release in order to see the changes.

This includes all the features we have planned for our 0.14.0 release for Mac as well!

  3. Release 0.13.0 for the Mac version of Creator. Release Candidate 0.13.4 - Fire TV and Gamepad Support

Release Candidate 0.13.4 - Fire TV and Gamepad Support

Features:

  • XBOX One controller support added for Creator Preview and Mac Desktop (USB only). Requires drivers for the gamepad to function in Mac OS. We recommend using the "Xone-OSX" driver.

  • Playstation 2 Dualshock support added for Creator Preview and Mac Desktop. For now, this is only supported with the HVG2 USB adapter.

  • NYKO Playpad Pro is officially supported with the Amazon Fire TV and other Android devices.

Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue with Change Scene behaviors failing to respond if preceded by a Change Scene behavior that uses the same gamepad button or analog direction to change the scene. Due to this fix, it is recommended that you don't use button press down (i.e. "true") in a rule to change scenes or else it will fire off the next scene's Change Scene behavior if it uses the same rule. Instead, capture the true to an attribute then wait for the button to turn false again.

  • Fixed Creator locking up when syncing a PS3 Dualshock 3/SIXAXIS controller via Bluetooth

  • Added code to guard against potential crashes when a gamepad is disconnected while Creator or a Mac Desktop app is open.

  • Fixed issues with Analog Sticks not allowing full range of motion with certain gamepads.

Known Issues:

  • Android devices running older api level (less than 16 or Android 4.1 Jellybean) may experience an InputManager crash (Bug 765).

  • Volume buttons don't work on Android devices while an app is open (Bug 760)

  • In Android, Kindle, and FireTV apks, the Player Joystick Connected boolean will turn false if the app is reloaded (Bug 740)

  • The Logitech F310 in X-Mode maps X, Y, A, and B incorrectly. (Bug 771)

  • RevMob ads are currently displaying incorrectly in iOS 8.1.3 (Bug 769)

  • It is possible that the gamepad you are using is not supported or acts strangely when used in a GameSalad app. Most Android bluetooth gamepads should work. As well as most gamepads that emulate an XBOX 360 controller. Your Mileage May Vary. Additional gamepads may be officially supported in the future.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY FROM GAMESALAD!

image

Release Candidate 0.13.3

Features:

  • FireTV support added. You can now publish apps specifically for the FireTV.

  • Gamepad support added for Android, Kindle, FireTV, and Mac Desktop apps

    • Supports up to 8 Players via USB and Bluetooth with new Game Device attributes

    • Single Player and Multi Player support. Single Player allows every connected Gamepad to act as Player 1. Multi Player treats every gamepad as a unique player. This can be toggled through the "Player Type" Game attribute.

    • Gamepad Buttons Supported: D-Pad Up, D-Pad Down, D-Pad Left, D-Pad Right, Button X, Button Y, Button B, Button A, Start, Select, Left Shoulder 1, Left Shoulder 2, Right Shoulder 1, Right Shoulder 2, Left Stick Click, Right Stick Click, Analog Sticks, and Analog Triggers (NOTE: The gamepad button names are only a reference to the standard XBOX 360 gamepad layout. Some controllers will have these named differently but should work the same)

    • Keyboard Mapping support with new Keymap Game attributes. You can use these to easily add gamepad support to existing projects that use keyboard controls. Just type in the key for the player and button you want to map. These new attributes can be changed like any other text attribute. (NOTE: We only support one button per keyboard key.)

    • Officially supported Gamepads:

      • Fire TV/Kindle/Android: Fire TV Remote, Fire TV Gamepad, XBOX 360 Wireless and Wired gamepads, PS4 Dualshock 4, Steelseries Free, OUYA Gamepad, Logitech F310 (X Mode), Game Elements Recoil, and any gamepad made for Android.

      • Mac Desktop/Creator Preview: XBOX 360 Wireless and Wired gamepads, PS4 Dualshock 4, Steelseries Free, Steelseries 3GC (Red Mode recommended), Logitech F310 (X Mode), Logitech Dual Action, Game Elements Recoil

Fixes:

  • Decreased how often the garbage collector runs in Mac Creator. This should result in smoother performance while in Creator. Memory usage in the short term will be higher.

  • Fixed an issue that caused iAds to appear at the top even if set to show at the bottom (Bug 688)

  • Fixed an issue with iOS apps where it could hang on start-up. (Bug 732)

Known Issues:

  • It is possible that the gamepad you are using is not supported or acts strangely when used in a GameSalad app. Most Android bluetooth gamepads should work. As well as most gamepads that emulate an XBOX 360 controller. Your Mileage May Vary. Additional gamepads may be officially supported in the future.

  • Most gamepads do not support both the analog and digital press of the triggers (L2 and R2). What this means is some gamepads will use the Left Shoulder 2 button (digital) while others will only use the Left Trigger axis (analog). Some gamepads may even use both. Plan accordingly.

  • On the Fire TV, gamepads that have a BACK or SELECT button are usually mapped to the Fire TV back command.

  • Syncing a PS3 Dualshock 3/SIXAXIS controller via Bluetooth while Creator is open causes Creator to lock up until the gamepad is disconnected.

  • The OUYA Gamepad's analog capabilities do not work correctly in Creator. However, they do work on Android devices (including the FireTV)

  • Vendor and Product IDs report as -1 on Android, Kindle, and Fire TV.

  • Change Scene behaviors will fail to respond if preceded by a Change Scene behavior that uses the same gamepad button or analog direction to change the scene (i.e. Pressing A to change from Scene 1 to Scene 2 and then pressing A to change from Scene 2 to Scene 3).

NOTE:

This build is based off the current stable build 0.12.20 it does NOT have any of the nightly build 0.13.2 features or fixes. The nightly build is being reversion to 0.14.

We have partnered with Amazon to make joystick support and publishing on Fire TV available to all non-PRO members for a limited time. PRO members always have access to joystick support and Fire TV publishing.

New FireTV forum created

Because the design and development process for FireTV games is so different from tablet- and PC-based projects, I thought it would be a good idea to create a separate FireTV dev forum.

Please use this to discuss your strategies for migrating existing games to the platform, specific techniques for designing to its strengths, etc.

It is here: http://forums.gamesalad.com/categories/working-with-gamesalad-firetv

Windows Creator Nightly 0.12.1 is available

Windows Creator Nightly build 0.12.1 is available

Features

  • All behaviors missing from Windows Creator 0.10.5 that are in Mac Creator 0.12 have been implemented, with the exception of the network behaviors.

  • New way of previewing your games: The green "play" button uses the native Lua engine, the same as used in Mac Creator. The HTML 5 previewer can still be accessed via the Play button with the orange HTML5 logo next to the Actor dimensions above the scene editor.

  • Along with Creator, the installer includes example projects. By default these will be installed in your documents directory under a "GameSalad Templates" folder.

Known Issues

  • The native previewer uses an updated graphics engine that is much faster than the current released engine. However, you MUST have a video card that supports OpenGL 3 or better in order to use it. Currently we do not disable the button if your graphics card does not support OpenGL 3, we will in the final release. Using the native previewer on a computer that does not support OpenGL 3 may result in Windows Creator crashing.

  • While the Show Ad behavior still exists, it has been deprecated in favor of the Show Banner behavior, and will be removed in a future release. If you use Show Ad in your project, please change the behavior to Show Banner.

  • There is a known bug where if you use the new native previewer, and then try to use the old web previewer, Windows Creator will crash. Please shut down Creator and restart if you want to switch between the previewers.

Report Any Bugs If you find bugs in the build, let us know! We'll be watching the forums, support tickets and bug database for info on this.

Thanks for your help!

[edit] added issue about the previewer switching crash.

What should the media buttons mapping be on remotes?

On the firetv remote there is a fast forward, play/pause and rewind button. Currently they are unmapped. Here are the current thoughts on what to map them to.

Notes on Resolution Independence on 0.12.x

0
0

Since there was some confusion about how the Resolution Independence feature works with the current version of Creator and the new devices/OS - we’ve compiled this summary to help clarify how the feature works.

NOTE: This applies to Creator version 0.12.6 and above.

iOS Universal / iPhone Apps

If you check Resolution Independence for an iOS Universal or iPhone Apps:

Your images will be renamed to @3x and be used on:

  • iPad Retina - 2048 x 1536 (for iOS Universal)

  • iPhone 6+ - 2208 x 1242

Your images will be resized to ⅔ original size and saved as @2x for use on:

  • iPad - 1024 x 768 (for iOS Universal)

  • iPhone 6 - 1334 x 750

  • iPhone 5 - 1136 x 640
  • iPhone 4 - 960 x 640

Your images will be resized to 1/3 original size and saved as the original image name for legacy iPhones (480 x 320)

This means your images should ideally be built targeting iPad (Retina) and iPhone 6+ and be 3x your actor size.

The idea is to match the image size to devices of similar resolution.

If the image sizes don't work for you, you can disable Resolution Independence. Disabling RI will do no resizing and load the images you include in the project on all platforms. In this situation, we depend on OpenGL to resize the images appropriately.

iPad Apps

This change is in QA right now but should be ready by the end of today. If you check Resolution Independence for an iPad App:

Your image will be renamed to @3x for use on iPad Retina.

Your image will be resized to ½ original size and saved as @2x to be used on non-Retina iPads.

The same ½ image will also be saved as the original image name again for completeness.

This is allows us to use the same size checks we do for iOS Universal. This will get you clean ½ resize on iPad only apps as before. Only the image name will be different.

Mac Apps

If you enable RI for Mac, we will now resize for Retina. Your image will be renamed to @2x. It will then be resized by half and saved as the original image name.

We'll also be adding the following features soon:

  • Legacy RI. If you've already designed your game for @2x RI only, what we'll be doing
is only writing out the original image @2x and half sized 1x images. This requires an
engine change so won't be available until 0.12.9 or so.

  • Custom RI. This is basically like turning off RI, but in this case you will be
expected to include images to match the resolution target buckets above.

  • The ability to toggle RI on publishing!

So this is how things are, and will likely shake out for the 0.12 final release.

I know that people will have some problems with this, namely that iPad non-Retina images will not resize evenly/sharply on iOS Universal. In these cases we suggest turning off RI if you see problems with your artwork.

If your project has problems with this system, please PM me the publishing portfolio link to the game so we can see the issue. This will help us come up with a better system for future releases.

I'd also like some input into the Custom RI feature. As a user would you rather upload the game with everything set up in the gameproj, or would you rather provide a separate zip file with all of your images renamed properly (sort of a way to patch the project)?

I hope this clears up any confusion about how RI works.

Cheers.
